Facing History and Ourselves: Holocaust and Human Behavior Seminar

National Teachers Academy, 55 W. Cermak, Chicago, IL

Join Facing History and Ourselves for a five-day seminar on the Holocaust and Human Behavior.  Together we will explore the range of choices leading up to World War II and examine how hatred, indifference, and denial – as well as caring, compassion, and responsibility – shape communities past and present.  Participants will come away with teaching strategies and resources that can be implemented in the classroom immediately, primary source documents, and activities that meet the Common Core State Standards.  Educators will explore the complexities of human behavior, as well as how communities and families can reckon with mass violence and trauma and strive to build more just, stable communities.  Past participants say Facing History’s professional development allows them to help students make connections to their own lives, understanding through their study of history that our past is not inevitable bu the result of choices, large and small, leaders and everyday citizens have made over time.

Scholarships are available for Chicago Public Schools teachers.

Facing History and Ourselves: Race and Membership in American History Seminar

National Teachers Academy, 55 W. Cermak, Chicago, IL

In the early 1900s many people believed that eugenics, or “race science,” was a progressive solution to social problems.  Followers of eugenics argued that protecting “racial purity” was essential in creating a healthy nation.  In the United States and around the world, eugenics had a profound impact on educational and public policies; in Nazi Germany, this new branch of scientific inquiry was ultimately used to justify mass murder.  Using Facing History’s resource book Race and Membership in American History: The Eugenics Movement, this seminar will explore how Americans defined citizenship and membership in the early part of the 20th century and the echoes and legacies of this movement today.

August 5th-9th, 9:00am-4:00pm
